Resources

Folking.com – a very useful news resource with lots of reviews (I do some of them, though not as often as I used to).

I’m no longer regularly writing for Folklife West or its siblings, but it’s well worth checking out for folk-related venue information as well as its articles. (I do some editing for them, still, by the way, just by way of full disclosure.)

Here are three relevant pages on this blog (though two of them need updating):

A podcast by Jon Wilks that looks at (mostly) traditional songs in depth: The Old Songs Podcast.

Mudcat and the Digital Tradition

Chris Rust’s Folk Music Map shows mostly folk clubs and similar venues in the UK, but is likely to be expanded. There aren’t many clubs in Cornwall listed, so someone is missing an opportunity.

O2’s music mapper page only has information on Fisherman’s Friends on the Cornish bit of their map at the moment, but they seem to be interested in listing folk artists to feature, and I’ve sent them a few suggestions. Anyway, you might find details of artists in other parts of the country of interest: many of us leave Cornwall at least occasionally, and miight be interested in whose where…

John Tremaine’s Folk In Cornwall magazine has lots of useful folk-related information about events, venues, music and musicians. (I write for it occasionally, which you may or may not consider a recommendation…)

I’m now mostly focused on my own music, but there may be more in due course, including some Facebook pages and groups. Talking of which:

  • Ian Semple’s Saturday lunchtime programme (12.00-14.00) for Coast FM: ‘Ian Semple brings you news, views and stories from the Penwith area with an eclectic selection of music. As an active musician, Ian performs in various venues and brings you a taste of some of the local talent available.’ [And even me, quite often. 🙂 More often than I deserve, some might say…]
  • What’s On Cornwall includes listings for folk, celtic, traditional, acoustic and much else (musical and non-musical, by which I mean sport, food etc, not rap – although…)

I haven’t been able to get to the Penzance folk club for a good while, but it’s very good indeed, and the web site has some useful information, including links to other events and venues.
